Another MiG goes down, pilot killed
Posted online: Wednesday, March 09, 2005 at 0140 hours IST
NEW DELHI, MARCH 8: In the second such accident this year, a MiG-21 fighter crashed this afternoon at Bikaner, killing its pilot and injuring six civilian contractors on the ground.
The MiG-21 Type 75 aircraft, the same type as the one that crashed on January 3, veered off the runway at 12:37 pm after landing and exploded, killing the pilot, Flying Officer T. Chavan.
The injured contractors were rushed to Bikaner’s PBM hospital by Nal air base personnel and they are said to be out of danger. An IAF spokesperson said those injured would be ‘‘suitable compensated’’.
Notorious for their poor safety record, a fleet comprising over 300 MiG-21s will be retired in the next four-five years, along with the MiG-23BN fighters. The IAF has, however, thrown its weight behind the MiG-21 Bis-upgrade.
MiG-21s have over the years come to be increasingly afflicted by engine failures and technical malfunctions. The IAF has already retired one MiG-23BN squadron at its frontier Halwara base (31 Squadron) and is all set to numberplate the 220 and 221 Squadrons this year — they are likely to be replaced by either Sukhoi-30MKI fighters or Mirage-2000s. The IAF’s impending acquisition of 124 multi-role fighters is meant to make up for the retired MiGs.
The IAF currently operates about 16 MiG-21 squadrons of all variants, though the number will reduce in a phased manner over the next four-five years as newly purchased and manufactured aircraft would arrive to take their place.

Apenas o segundo no ano. Nada espetacular comparado com alguns anos atrás. Vê-se claramente que os esforços no sentido de aumentar a segurança de vôo por parte da Força Aérea Indiana tem surtido efeito.

MiG-21 to continue to be IAF's mainstay
By Sandeep Dikshit
NEW DELHI, APRIL 1. Putting its trust in MiG-21 fighters, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is planning to modernise 12 of its squadrons as against the original plan of six, a senior official said here today. The IAF is currently upgrading 125 MiG-21 fighters but will now evaluate the performance of the first lot of upgraded planes, called "MiG-21 Bison," before modernising another batch of 125 planes.
"It is our mainstay and is very efficient. It is capable and has plenty of residual life. It will continue to feed our requirements till 2016," the IAF's Director-General (Inspection & Safety), P.S. Ahluwalia, said here today. The MiG planes currently account for nearly half of the IAF fleet. "All the planes in the 12 squadrons will be equipped with the latest avionics, electronic warfare capabilities, navigation aids and beyond visual range firing ability. Plans are being developed and we are seeing the performance (of the upgraded planes)," he added.
At the same time, the IAF would be retiring the first two batches of MiG-21s that entered service in the mid-sixties. "In due course, two types of MiG-21s will go out along with MiG-23s and MiG-27s," said Air Marshal Ahluwalia. The accident rate of MiG-21s had declined over time after the IAF mastered the technology. As many as 90 per cent of the accidents were due to technical errors and these were being eliminated with the increased use of simulators, modification of the training syllabus and taking strict action against defaulters.
The IAF DG (Safety) maintained that these and other corrective steps have had a positive impact.

Jaguar crashes, one killed
Basti (UP), May 11. — A Jaguar deep penetration strike aircraft of
the IAF today crashed in a village near Gorakhpur air base, minutes
after take off, killing the pilot Flt Lt A Singh, and injuring three
women on the ground.
The aircraft, on a low level tactical flying mission, crashed at
8.20 a.m. near Devri village in Basti district, an IAF spokesman
said in Delhi. Though, he said there was no loss of life in the
crash on the ground, local police reported three women had suffered
minor injuries.
The IAF has ordered a Court of Inquiry to find out the cause of the
accident, which comes three years after an experts' team from Rolls
Royce, Hindustan Aeronautics limited and Directorate of Quality
Assurance, had cleared the aircraft for flying, after snags in the
engine of the fighter were reported. The team, according to IAF
sources, undertook aircraft-by-aircraft check of the IAF's two
Jaguar squadrons, when some of the planes powered by Rolls Royces
Adour engines reported low thrust. "Some remedial measures have been
implemented," the defence minister said recently. — PTI

O problema do AMX não é cair, mas o fato do assento ejetor dele funcionar muito pouco. Que me lembro de todos os AMX acidentados, somente ocorreu uma ejeção bem sucedida. Eu particularmente considero isto como algo preocupante.
