Belgium decommissions its last Wielingen-class frigate

The Belgian Navy will bid farewell to the last of its four Wielingen-class frigates at a decommissioning ceremony on 15 October. The 1970s-vintage BNS Westdiep is due to pay off in Zeebrugge after a service career in which it has steamed more than 550,000 n miles. Following on from the retirements of sister ships BNS Westhinder (1993), BNS Wandelaar (2004) and BNS Wielingen (2006), it will leave the navy with just two surface combatants - the Karel Doorman-class frigates BNS Leopold I and BNS Louise-Marie. Equipped with a 100 mm Creusot-Loire main gun, Exocet surface-to-surface missiles, Sea Sparrow anti-air missiles, torpedoes and a six-barrelled rocket launcher, the 2,430-ton Wielingens earned a reputation as compact but well-armed vessels.

State Secretary Hands Over Frigate to Belgium

In Antwerp today, Dutch State Secretary Jack de Vries transferred the Dutch navy frigate HNLMS Willem van der Zaan to the Belgian Navy. Belgian Queen Paola christened the ship “Louise Marie.”

The Willem van der Zaan is the second Multi-purpose frigate (M-frigate) transferred by the Netherlands to its neighbor. A year ago, HNLMS Karel Doorman was the first to be delivered to Belgium. Another four frigates have been sold to Chile and Portugal, while the two remaining M-frigates continue serving with the Dutch Navy.

M-frigates were developed for air-defense anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface ship missions. The fleet’s missions have been reviewed after the end of the Cold War, and Dutch naval operations are now being re-focused on coastal waters. A study of Dutch seapower released in 2005 found that part of the new missions can be carried out with small corvettes or patrol ships.

The Willem van der Zaan served for 15 years with the Dutch navy, during which it covered over a million nautical miles.

Belgians Upgrade M-frigates

The Belgian navy is upgrading its two M-frigates, the Leopold I and the Louise-Marie, following suit with the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN). The upgrades, which will be conducted in 2011 and 2013, include the installation of Seastar and Gatekeeper sensors from Thales.



The Seastar non-rotating active phased array radar and the Gatekeeper 360° panoramic electro-optical surveillance and alerter system are designed to provide warships with the capability to detect small targets and to counter border-running, pollution, drug trafficking and piracy. They will be matched with the SMART-S surveillance radar and STIR weapon control radar which equip M-frigates.




The Belgian navy is exercising the option contained in the 2008 contract the RNLN signed with Thales for Seastar and Gatekeeper for its two M-frigates. The Leopold I and Louise-Marie are former RNLN M-frigates transferred to the Belgian navy in 2007-2008.

não, continua a ser só 1, só que como o NH90 é maior que o Lynx, o convés de vôo foi aumentado, e o hangar também tem de ser elevado, salvo erro +1,0m

Helicopter Deck and Hangar Modification on ‘Leopold 1' Handed Over

On 7th of April 2010 the helicopter deck and hangar modification on board of the M-Class Frigate ‘Leopold 1' (ex HMNLS ‘Karel Doorman' ) was handed over to the Defence Material Organisation (DMO) of the Netherlands, who acted on behalf of the Belgian Navy.

Effectively, the ‘Leopold 1’ berthed at our shipyard in Vlissingen in July 2009, after which the program immediately started with the aim to modify the helicopter deck and hangar in order to allow future operations with the NH 90 helicopter.

The following main activities have been performed:

--Lengthening of the hangar, including the installation of the helicopter securing and traversing system
--Helicopter deck lengthening, including all required adjustments to the flight deck arrangement (reallocation of existing helicopter grid, steelwork modifications for the installation of the rails in flight deck, new lightning and antenna arrangements)
--Integration of the helicopter traversing control position, including o.a. the installation of the control equipment
--Installation of a new, enlarged hangar door
--Enlarging the Flight Deck Officer Room
--Adjusting the helicopter auxiliary and Damage Control Systems.


Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding delivered the modified ‘Leopold 1' on schedule and within budget to the DMO, whereby the collaboration with Belgium Navy and the Project Team of DMO have positively contributed to this tripartite success.
