Spanish Army Awards General Dynamics Santa Barbara Sistemas Euro 181 Million Contract for Howitzers

(Source: General Dynamics; issued Oct. 24, 2005)

MADRID, Spain --- General Dynamics Santa Barbara Sistemas has signed an eight-year, euro 181 million (US $216.2 million) contract to supply the Spanish Army with a total of 70 155/52 APU SBT howitzers. General Dynamics Santa Barbara Sistemas is a subsidiary of General Dynamics.

The contract includes the acquisition of four of the current 155/52 APU SBT (V07) howitzers, and design, development, production and delivery of 66 units of a new version of the howitzer (named SIAC) with improved mobility and new capabilities, including C2 integration. The contract also includes retrofit of 12 Army APU SBT howitzers from the V06 to the V07 version; 82 towing vehicles and radio communication sets; and integrated logistical support.

Subcontractors on the program include Amper (Madrid, Spain) for communications equipment and Iveco (Turin, Italy) for vehicles.

The APU SBT is a 155mm, 52 caliber towed/self-propelled howitzer developed by General Dynamics Santa Barbara Sistemas; it provides substantial benefits thanks to a high rate of fire, high survivability, digital navigation and automatic laying system, low maintenance, and a reduced crew requirement. The Spanish Army has four 155/52 APU SBT (V06) howitzers already in service for field artillery and eight APU SBT (V07) howitzers integrated in a Coastal Artillery Group.

General Dynamics Santa Barbara Sistemas, part of the General Dynamic European Land Combat Systems unit, employs approximately 2,300 people in nine facilities in Spain and Germany. It is the Spanish Army's main supplier of combat vehicles and ammunition. The company has production contracts for the Spanish Leopard tank and the Pizarro Infantry Fighting, in addition to other systems, and its products are marketed in 47 countries.

General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 71,900 people worldwide and had 2004 revenue of $19.2 billion. The company is a market leader in mission-critical information systems and technologies; land and expeditionary combat systems, armaments and munitions; shipbuilding and marine systems; and business aviation.

THAAD Missile Successful in Developmental Flight Test

DALLAS: Lockheed Martin successfully conducted a developmental flight test of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile today at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), NM. This was the first flight of the Block '04 missile that is being tested under an Engineering and Manufacturing contract awarded to Lockheed Martin in 2000.

The test completed today starts a new round of THAAD developmental testing that builds on the investment from earlier THAAD tests, which included two consecutive target intercepts in 1999. Today's test was designed to evaluate the missile during fly-out, as well as demonstrate and collect data on missile control. No target was involved in the test. Preliminary data indicates all test objectives were achieved.

Some of the specific objectives of this test included evaluating how the missile exited the canister, booster and kill vehicle separation, kill vehicle control, and operation of the divert and attitude control system (DACS). Although the complete THAAD system includes a radar, fire control, launchers and missiles, today's test was of the missile only.

"This is a great day for the warfighter, our customer and the entire THAAD team as we move a step closer toward making this system's unique capabilities available for operational use," said Tom McGrath, Lockheed Martin program manager and vice president for THAAD. "The THAAD team has prepared for this initial developmental flight test for a long time, and we remain focused on building on this momentum as we plan and prepare for future tests."

"THAAD is designed to defend U.S. troops, allied forces, population centers and critical infrastructure against threat ballistic missiles," said Mike Trotsky, vice president -- Air and Missile Defense programs at Lockheed Martin. "THAAD's unique endo- and exo-atmospheric capability enlarges the battle space to allow multiple intercept opportunities in both the late-midcourse and terminal phases of ballistic missile trajectories. This flexibility provides added protection with layered coverage."

The THAAD missile uses hit-to-kill technology to destroy short, medium and intermediate range ballistic missiles that can carry weapons of mass destruction. THAAD can accept cues from the sea-based Aegis system, satellites and other external sensors to further extend the battle space and defended area coverage. THAAD was designed to provide upper-tier, layered coverage and operate in concert with the lower-tier PAC-3 Missile system. A key element of the nation's Ballistic Missile Defense System, THAAD is a Missile Defense Agency program.

"We approached the start of flight testing very systematically, including an extensive ground test program and complete qualification of the missile and its components," said Tory Bruno, Lockheed Martin vice president for the THAAD missile. "This disciplined approach paid off today, and our entire team of employees and subcontractors was singularly focused on achieving mission success."

THAAD's next flight test will launch a missile with all elements of the integrated weapon system engaged and operating. The next four THAAD flight tests will be conducted at WSMR. After those flights, the test program will move to Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, HI, where range space allows THAAD to fly increasingly longer and more complex missions.

Lockheed Martin is prime contractor and systems integrator for the THAAD missile defense system. Major subcontractors on the program include: Raytheon Co., radar; Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, Inc., divert and attitude control system (DACS); Honeywell, mission computer and inertial measurement unit (IMU); BAE Systems, infrared seeker; Aerojet-General Corporation, missile booster; Hamilton Sundstrand, thrust vector assembly; and Pacific Scientific, laser initiated ordnance system.

Lockheed Martin is a world leader in systems integration and the development of air and missile defense systems and technologies, including the first operational hit-to-kill missile defense system. It also has considerable experience in missile design and production, infrared seekers, command and control/battle management, and communications, precision pointing and tracking optics, as well as radar and signal processing. The company makes significant contributions to all major U.S. missile defense systems and participates in several global missile defense partnerships.

Russia to deliver multiple launch rocket systems to India
17:20 | 23/ 01/ 2006

MOSCOW, January 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's main arms exporter, Rosoboronexport, and the Indian Defense Ministry have signed a contract to deliver Smerch multiple-launch rocket systems for two Indian army regiments, a company official said Monday.

"Rosoboronexport and the Indian Defense Ministry signed a contract on the delivery of two regiments of the Smerch MLRS to the Indian army on December 31, 2005," said Viktor Komardin, the deputy director-general of Rosoboronexport.

The 9K58 Smerch 300 mm MLRS is designed to destroy a variety of targets, including combat vehicles, artillery units, tactical missiles, air defense systems and landed helicopters as well as command posts, communications centers and defense-industry facilities. It has a 90-km firing range and can cover a 70-km area with a 12-tube salvo.

Russia's Vedomosti newspaper reported last year that India would buy no fewer than 36 multiple-launch rocket systems for about $450 million.

With the signing of the contract, India will become the third country to receive the Smerch MLRS. Russia delivered 18 systems to Algeria in 1999 and 27 systems to Kuwait in 1995-1996.

According to the Defense Ministry, Russia is currently working on contracts with India worth $10 billion.

Notable deals in recent years include a contract for the modernization and sale of the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier, and deals on Sukhoi fighters and T-90 main battle tanks.

New Infantry Weapon Will Help Deliver a More Precise Capability

(Source: UK Ministry of Defence; issued Feb. 6, 2006)

A £40m contract to deliver the Anti-Structures Munition, a new shoulder-launched weapon which will allow the British infantry to more precisely and safely defeat hardened structures such as buildings or bunkers, without recourse to artillery or air support, has been awarded to Dynamit Nobel Defence, Minister for Defence Procurement Lord Drayson announced today.

It does not replace a weapon system currently in service, but adds a potent new capability to the Infantry's arsenal, which has already been enhanced through programmes to provide night sights, under slung grenade launchers and the state of the art SA80A2 assault rifle.

Lord Drayson said:

"I am pleased to announce the award of the contract for the demonstration and manufacture of the Anti-Structures Munition to Dynamit Nobel Defence. The contract is valued at £40m and includes provision of combat weapons, training systems and contractor logistic support for the first five years.

"The Anti-Structures Munition will provide our Armed Forces with a new capability. It will enable our infantry to more precisely defeat hardened structures such as buildings or bunkers - improving the safety of UK forces, reducing the danger to civilians in the area and the damage caused to neighbouring buildings.

"It is essential that we provide our Armed Forces with the tools they need to get the job done as safely, precisely and quickly as possible. This munition will help do just that."

Dynamit Nobel Defence was selected following a rigorous competition which included full test firings of the weapon and soldier trials. The system is planned to be in service by the end of 2009.

BACKGROUND NOTE:

The Anti-Structures Munition project is being managed by the Infantry Guided Weapons Integrated Project Team (IPT) within the Defence Procurement Agency (DPA) at MOD Abbey Wood. The in service capability will be managed by the Defence General Munitions IPT within the Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO) at MOD Andover.
