President Trump’s erratic and aggressive foreign policy gives Beijing the chance to portray itself as a pillar of global stability.
The USAF is rethinking its air base defence strategy. Advanced Chinese missiles such as the DF-26 and DF-17 can strike US airfields in the opening minutes of a conflict. The old strategy of projecting power from secure, rearward bases won’t hold in a contested Pacific.
To counter the threat, the USAF needs better situational awareness, active defenses, and passive measures: dispersing aircraft, hardened shelters, decoys, and rapid runway repairs. It’ll be costly, but with bases at risk, can the US afford not to invest?
