Fincantieri has been contracted to build two additional U212A submarines for the Italian Navy, similar to the Salvatore Todaro already in service. (US Navy photo)
Contract Signed For the Delivery of Components for Two Italian Class 212A Submarines
(Source: ThyssenKrupp Technologies; issued November 13, 2008)
On 11th November 2008 the Italian shipyard Fincantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A. and the German Submarine Consortium signed a contract in Genoa for the delivery of components for two Class 212A submarines. The German Submarine Consortium for Italy is made up of Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW) and TKMS Blohm + Voss Nordseewerke GmbH (BVN) – both companies belong to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems – and MarineForce International LLP.
HDW and BVN will deliver construction documents and components, such as for the fuel cell propulsion system, the torpedo tube bow section and other smaller components for the 2nd batch. This will increase to 24 the number of submarines at sea around the world equipped with an HDW fuel cell propulsion system.
The two Class 212A boats to be built by Fincantieri in Muggiano for the Italian Navy are sister ships to the 1st batch of these submarines. The first two boats were also built in Italy to German specifications and documentation, and they have been in operational service in the Italian Navy since 2006 and 2007. Delivery of the new boats is scheduled for September 2015 and September 2016.
Main characteristics of the Class 212A submarines for the Italian Navy:
Length: approx. 56 m
Height: approx. 11m
Displacement: approx. 1,450 t
Crew: 27

Re: Marinha Italiana
Italy's newest aircraft carrier like a son-captain
Tue Oct 6, 2009 1:25pm EDT

By Jo Winterbottom
LA SPEZIA, Italy (Reuters Life!) - Italy's newest aircraft carrier is a pretty big baby. But the Cavour's captain sees his ship as exactly that: a son growing up before his eyes.
"I saw the ship growing day by day. So I feel it's like a son," Captain Gianluigi Reversi told Reuters in a recent interview aboard the 27,500 tonne ship.
The Cavour is docked at La Spezia while it undergoes maintenance following a year of tests, before it goes into full service probably some time in 2010.
Reversi became captain in 2005, when the ship started to be built, and will hand over to a successor next year.
"I have followed each step and I know every part, all the hidden angles," he said. He also had the 545 strong crew to train on the new ship.
"I will give the captain who follows me not only a body but a body with a heart and a brain," Reversi said.
Last week, that body was flexing its muscles to move journalists on board for the launch of Fiat's Punto Evo model.
The press conference was raised en bloc from the hangar to the 220 meter (yards) long runway deck by the massive lifting platform that normally hoists aircraft or helicopters.
The Punto Evos then showed off their turning circles on the deck, which is 34 meters wide, and came to a halt facing journalists with headlights on under a star-struck sky.
Dinner in a marquee pitched on the deck was followed by an overnight stay in one of the carrier's cabins, which usually sleep four crew but hosted just one reporter each.
The slimmed down staffing -- Italy's only other aircraft carrier, the 30-year-old Garibaldi, has up to 800 on board -- is made possible because of the advanced technology onboard.
"The Cavour can do the work of three or four different ships," Reversi said, in terms of the varying roles it can play. It can carry a maximum of 24 airplanes and helicopters.
The increased technology means even though the ship has a bridge with windows, the real business of running it takes place below deck.
"I spend most of my time in the combat information center, though the bridge is the place from which the ship is steered and where I am whenever needed," Reversi said.
There's also a state-of-the-art hospital on board, a gym and a library, along with televisions and computers.
The ship carries enough fresh provisions to allow it to go 45 days without entering port or cracking open tinned food and to sail for about 7,000 nautical miles at an average speed of 16 knots.
But so far, the longest voyages undertaken by the Cavour have been two weeks for testing and training personnel.
Reversi will steer the ship next year through its final testing and expected certificate for full operations before he hands over command. He doesn't know yet what comes after that.
"My wife says she will have a hard job trying to make me forget the ship," he said.

Re: Marinha Italiana

Fincantieri has begun building two additional Todaro-class U212A submarines for the Italian Navy; deliveries are planned for 2015 and 2016. (US Navy photo)
TRIESTE, Italy --- Today at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano there was the ceremony to celebrate the cutting of the first sheeting – marking the start-up of construction of the first of the second pair of class U212A “Todaro” submarines, ordered by the Central Unit for Naval Armament – NAVARM for the Italian Navy.
Scheduled for delivery in 2015 and 2016, the Navy has earmarked these vessels to replace the “Prini” and the “Pelosi” submarines (“Sauro” classe– third series), built at the end of the 1980s.
Present at the ceremony were, beside Fincantieri’s representative, Admiral Dino Nascetti, General Director of NAVARM.
Construction of the two submarines is the continuation of a program which started in 1994 in cooperation with the German Submarine Consortium, which led to two submarines being built for Italy – the “Todaro” and the “Scirè”, delivered by Fincantieri in 2006 and 2007 respectively – and four submarines for Germany.
At an overall length of 56 metres, the vessels will have a surface displacement of 1,450 tons and a maximum diameter of 7 metres and be able to reach a submerged speed of 20 knots with a crew of 24. As the other submarines in the series, this new submarine will feature highly innovative technological solutions and will be entirely built employing amagnetic materials, applying the latest silencing devices in order to reduce its acoustic signature.
The vessel will be equipped with a silent propulsion system based on fuel cell technology, producing energy through an oxygen-hydrogen reaction independently from external oxygen, ensuring a submerged range three to four times higher than the conventional battery-based systems. It will also feature a fully integrated electro-acoustic and weapon-control system, and a modern platform automation system.
The first two submarines of this type delivered by Fincantieri are already successfully at work within the fleet of the Italian Navy. Indeed, on the first December the “Scirè" returned to Taranto having participated in CONUS ’09 - an intense naval campaign in the Atlantic with the US Navy while in the summer the “Todaro” was also engaged in a similar mission within the framework of NATO manoeuvres. This submarine is at present anchored at Fincantieri’s Muggiano yard for scheduled maintenance to be carried out by Fincantieri which has recently also been tasked with managing the vessel’s life support program.
Commenting, Fincantieri’s Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe Bono, said: “Continuation of this program with the Navy benefits both our national defence and our industry. These submarines constitute state-of the-art for the sector, our country cannot not afford to lose the know-how needed to work in such a high tech field.”
